Action 842:
This comic was pretty lame. Usually most of the titles I read have alot going for them, interesting art, strong storytelling-something. I've been reading Action Comics for a few months now and it has been nothing but disapointments. This latest issue has been no exception.
The story plays off a classic idea which we've all heard a hundred times. You know the one where some intergalactic merchant/collector is kidnapping all the superheros and storing them to sell off to other collectors or zoo's or whatever. I mean come on, this story has been told waaay too many times. When are the creative powers that be gonna let this one go. I could tolerate the revival of this tired zombie story if there was some new twist or unique viewpoint to it. But this issue is the same ole sludge. The other thing that frosts my fur is that in this instance they never really even explain how the heros are being held powerless. They just kinda glaze over it. To me, that seemed like a big hole that needed to be filled. It wasn't.
Ok so the story sucks. I've established that. Well lemme rephrase, it doesn't suck it was a good premise the first 20 times I've heard it. This one was once too many. Please DC, let this be the last time. As a personal favor. Please.
The art however, was solid. The angle choices seemed quite cinematic. The part that caught my attention the most was the detailed backdrops. I hate nothing more than incredible middle and foreground art with nothing but a plain color backdrop in the back. Too many books recently embrace this "easy way out" background style. Not enough Gil Kane in these new artists. I just re-read Sword of the Atom. Damn, that man could draw. Too much fun.
Action Comics 842...sad, so sad.
